Tools for Examination The mirror is one of the most important instruments that a dentist can use during his or her examination of the patient. The mirror is actually a small circular shape that is attached to a metal rod. This allows the dentist to look at the teeth at various angles, especially the set of upper teeth and the backs and sides of some that are difficult to view without it. It guides the dental practitioner to see and assess the state of the teeth and gums of the patient. Probes are also used to assess the oral cavity. The dental explorer probes the crevices and niches of each tooth to seek out cavities and other imperfections. The periodontal probe is used o check out the patient\’s gums while the straight probe is used for various ways in seeking out imperfections that both the dental explorer and the periodontal probe cannot reach. Drills The drill is used to make cavities easier to access and treat. Some cavities have jagged edges that may not be easy to treat and cover with composite. The dental drill makes the edges as well as the sides of the cavities smooth to make it easier for the composite to bond with it and seal it. The dentist also uses the drill to sculpt and arrange the composite in such a way that it conforms to the corresponding tooth beside, below or above it. The sizes of the drill bits differ and they are used in accordance to the preferences and skill of the dental practitioner. Excavators These are instruments used to remove various substances and tissues from cavities in the mouth and its many aspects. A spoon excavator is used to decay which is soft and carious from the teeth. Another excavator is called the half hollenbach which is used to test for flash or overhangs in the tooth. Chisels are used by the dentist to bevel the maxillary. There are several different classes of these used in accordance to the preferences of the dental practitioner. Surgical Instruments are used for surgery and extraction of a tooth. Extraction and surgery is often performed by a dentist who is trained and skilled in surgery. Those who focus on cosmetic dentistry or orthodontics usually do not do surgery. These are just a few of the instruments and tools that a dentist can and will use to perform the various operations and treatments that he is trained to do. Other dental practitioners who have specialized in other fields of dentistry may have specialized tools as well. These may be developed by the dentist himself or developed by manufacturers to provide the needs of the practitioners.
